ABOUT HOTEL CARDO

We're gonna make this place your home

Heritage Hotel Cardo is located in the very heart of Diocletian’s Palace, the best preserved Classical Roman imperial residence in the world.

The Heritage Hotel Cardo is located within a two-story building with a façade reflecting all the historic and cultural periods of Medieval Europe: Romanesque, Flamboyant Gothic and Renaissance. The warm ambience is emphasized by natural light penetrating the handmade stained-glass windows. The entrance to this small, but unique hotel is from the former main street Cardo (now Diocletian’s street), after which the facility was named.

The Heritage Hotel Cardo is located precisely over the Classical via cardo porch, constructed on the wide city street in the Middle Ages against the wall of the grand northern basilica, which was the administrative center of the palace, and the remains of its massive walls built with the opus mixtum technique are presented in the interior of some of the rooms.

The building which is hosting the Heritage Hotel Cardo was part of the late Renaissance extension of the D’Augubio palace, the seat of one of the most prestigious 15th century families. It was constructed in Flamboyant Gothic style by several master craftsmen, including Andrija Aleši, who was the pupil of the great master Juraj Dalmatinac, the builder of Šibenik Cathedral and the portal of Dodge’s Palace in Venice known as Porta della carta.

Archeological remains of Classical Antiquity period, handmade brick floors, Gothic stained-glass windows and handmade oak furniture are just some of the attractions of this unique family hotel.

Heritage Hotel Cardo is a genuine historical area of Split whose historical layers have been preserved through a long-standing restoration and today it proudly presents cultural and historical heritage of the city of Split.

Instead, it is melted and moulded which makes it more malleable, lending itself to intricate designs and also a softer appearance. Classic Murano chandelier are decorated with polychromatic or transparent flowers, leaves and fruits, as well as moulded crystals

THE GRAPHIC PLAN OF SPLIT 1724.

split plan

This plan of Split city from 1695. is published in the atlas “Noveau Theatre de l’ Italie” in 1724. The plan is interesting because it shows Split before Karlovački mir settlement (1699.), while the city still was in direct danger of the Turks. Its purpose was not military, but most probably only informative – to demonstrate Split defense force to the European public. The map title can be found inscribed within the city walls 59.5×53.5 cm
